Hemstock Films is a Calgary, Alberta-based video production company founded in 2009 by director and cinematographer Mark Hemstock. With over 16 years in business and 20-plus years of professional filmmaking experience, Hemstock Films has built a reputation as one of Calgary's most trusted and accomplished production companies — delivering award-winning cinematic content for corporate clients, brands, musicians, documentary filmmakers, and television producers across Alberta and beyond.
Mark Hemstock — Director, Cinematographer and Founder
Mark Hemstock is a Calgary native who moved to Vancouver in 2005 to study digital film and video production at the Art Institute of Vancouver. He spent 16 years working as a freelance director and Director of Photography across music videos, commercials, corporate productions, and documentaries before returning to Calgary in 2021 to focus on Alberta's growing film industry.
Award-Winning Feature Documentary Filmmaker
Mark's most recent feature documentary, The Truth and the Seeker, has won three international awards: Best Educational Film at the Cannes World Film Festival, Best Feature Documentary at the Rome International Movie Awards, and the Award of Excellence at the Accolade Global Film Competition. It is available to stream on Vimeo on Demand.
Amazon Prime Mini-Series — Angel Dust
In 2021, Mark directed and served as Director of Photography on Angel Dust, a dramatic mini-series shot entirely in Alberta and co-produced with Break the Chain Productions. It won Best Mini Series at the 2022 Cannes International Cinema Film Festival and Best Cinematography at the 2023 California Indies. Now streaming on Amazon Prime.
Feature Documentary — Africa: A Kung Fu Story
In 2022, Mark served as Director of Photography and editor on Africa: A Kung Fu Story, a feature documentary currently on the international film festival circuit. This documentary is An engaging and unique look into Kung Fu in Dar Es Salam, Tanzania, follows Master Mfaume as he teaches Kung Fu and filmmaking while helping give the next generation a better future.
First Feature Documentary — PHI: The evolution of consciousness
PHI was Hemstock Films' first independent feature documentary, directed and shot by Mark Hemstock, released to critical acclaim in 2017, and available on Vimeo on Demand, Gaia Network and Amazon Prime. PHI is a documentary which explores the mystery of the golden ratio throughout nature and human consciousness.
Currently in Production — World’s fastest scirocco
Mark is currently shooting a fourth feature documentary in Springbank, Alberta, following a racing team as they build a custom land speed race car.
